The history of the Schöneweide elementary schools can be traced back to 1879. The basis for this is the emergence of the Schöneweide district. The name Schöneweide comes from the former excursion destination on the beautiful pasture. The district part was later split into Ober- and Niederschöneweide. At 1800 the Niederschöneweide was an almost untouched forest area and had 29 inhabitants. In 1873 Niederschöneweide broke away from the Köpenick district and was then an independent district.
The first own school in Niederschöneweide was established in 1879. This was followed by the inauguration of the school in Hasselwerderstrasse in 1899. At that time it was the most modern school in Berlin due to its own shower system. At that time the auditorium was mainly used for church services. In 1906 the sewer system was expanded in this region. In the following years Schöneweide turned into an industrial district. This increased the number of residents and the required educational institutions in this district. In 1927, the S-Bahn was taken up to Niederschöneweide. The prerequisite for this was the construction of a long-distance train station in 1876.
Our school was built around 1900 before the First World War. At that time, Niederschöneweide had 12,000 inhabitants. During the Second World War our school was used as a barracks and a hospital. After the war, there were difficulties in resuming classes. There was a lack of teaching aids and many school buildings were damaged or destroyed. The grievances were slowly overcome. From 1945 lessons took place in the neighboring school (Hasselwerderstrasse). The school building was far too small, so classes could only be held in shifts. In 1948 the school moved back into its own building on Rudower Strasse. The former boys' school was converted into a mixed school.
The school reform law for Greater Berlin introduced eight years of compulsory schooling for all children. The general education acquired in primary school was the basis for secondary school facilities.
With the move back in 1948, the school became a primary school and later a POS, which was called "FE Dzierzynski" until 1989.
After the general overhaul of the school and the refurbishment of the various school types in Treptow in 1991, the then "Extended Oberschule", formerly "Klement-Gottwald-Oberschule (KGO)", moved from Plänterwald to the newly renovated building in Rudower Straße. After a year as the 3rd Treptow grammar school, the school was given its new name on October 14, 1992: Archenhold Oberschule (grammar school), now Archenhold grammar school.
